1. Tricolor Idli

Tricolor idli or tiranga idli is the new variation to the simple traditional idli. Give a new colorful twist to the simple idli with different color paste & indian spices. Indian food recipes are incomplete without spicy & flavorful Indian spices.  You can turn out the white color into orange color through carrot puree & green color with the spinach puree.

  • Rice  –  3 cups
  • Urad Dal (Split black lentils)  –  1 cup
  • Salt as per taste
  • Spinach puree or Peas Puree  –  2 tbsp
  • Carrot puree  –  2 tbsp
  • Oil for greasing


For Spinach Puree

  • Wash the spinach.
  • Boil the water in a pan and add the spinach to it.
  • Boil it for 5-7 min.
  • Drain the excess water and wash it with cool water.
  • Now grind it in a mixer into a smooth paste.
  • Take it out into a bowl and keep it aside.

For Peas Puree

  • Boil the peas for 10 min.
  • Drain the excess water and grind it into the smooth paste.
  • Take it out in a bowl and keep it aside.

For Carrot Puree

  • Wash the carrots and slice it into small pieces.
  • Now boil it for at least 10 min.
  • Sieve the excess water & wash it with cool water.
  • Grind it into a smooth paste.

For Idli Batter

  • Wash and soak the rice and urad dal separately in lukewarm water for 2-3 hrs.
  • Grind rice and urad dal in a smooth paste.
  • Mix rice and urad dal paste and keep it overnight or for 8-10 hrs.
  • Add salt to the batter and divide the batter equally in three different bowls.
  • Mix carrot puree in 1 section of the batter for the orange colour. Stir it well.
  • Add spinach or peas puree to another section for the green colour.
  • Leave third section of batter for white color.

For Idli

  • Now grease the idli mould with the oil. Fill the idli mould with the different batter means every color batter separately.
  • Steam the idlis on the high flame for 10 min.
  • Take out the mould from the idli pan and leave it for 5-10 min.
  • Now take out the idlis from the mould with the knife or spoon.
  • Yummy Tiranga or tricolor idlis are ready to serve with coconut chutney and Sambhar.

2. Tricolor Rawa Dhokla

We usually make dhokla with besan. But this is the new & healthy way to eat dhokla. This tricolor Indian food recipe is easy to make. All you need is just make three different coloured layers & arrange them on each other. Greasing all the layers with the spicy & tangy tadka make it more tempting.

For Dhokla

  • Rawa (suji)  –  3-4 bowls
  • Yogurt  –  3 bowl
  • Mint or coriander chutney  –  1 tbsp
  • Ginger paste  –  1/2 tbsp
  • Carrot puree  –  2 tbsp
  • Chilli powder  –  1/2 tbsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Meetha soda or eno  –  1 spoon
  • Red chilli powder & salt mixture  –  1/2 tbsp each
  • Lemon  – 2 piece

For Tadka

  • Oil  –  2 tbsp
  • Mustard seeds  –  1 tbsp
  • Meetha Neem Patta  –  8-10 leaves
  • Sliced green chillies  –   2 tbsp


For Dhokla

  • Mix yogurt & rawa in a pan. Stir it well. Keep it at least for half hour.
  • At the time of making, Mix salt & meetha soda. Stir well & divide the batter into 3 parts.
  • In 1st part – Add mint or coriander chutney to the batter for the green color.
  • In 2nd part – Add carrot puree (Chk the recipe of carrot puree in 1st recipe) & red chili powder for the orange color.
  • In 3rd part – Add ginger paste and leave it white.
  • Grease the dhokla mould with the cooking oil.
  • Take the greased dhokla plates & add the green batter in the 1st plate, the orange batter in 2nd plate and white batter in 3rd plate.
  • Steam the dhoklas for 10-15 min on high flame.
  • Take the plates out from the vessel and leave it for 5 min.

For Tadka

  • Take a frying pan and heat 2 tbsp oil in it.
  • Add mustard seed, metha neem patta & sliced green chillies.
  • Cook it for a min.

At the time of serving

  • Take out the dhoklas in the serving plate.
  • 1st keep the green dhokla and & season it with tadka. Sprinkle the salt & chilli powder. Season it with lemon drops too.
  • Then keep the white dhokla and again season it with the tadka, salt, red chilli powder & lemon.
  • Finally keep the orange dhokla & season it with the same.
  • While serving, cut them in the slices from top to bottom & garnish it with coriander leaves (optional).
  • Serve the Tiranga dhokla with the chutney.

3.  Tricolor Pasta Salad

  • Tri-color pasta  –  3 cups
  • Red capsicum  –  1/4 cup
  • Green capsicum  –  1/4 cup
  • Black olives  –  1/4 cup
  • Green olives  –  1/4 cup (optional)
  • Broccoli florets  –  2 cup
  • Tomato sliced  –  1 cup
  • Mozzarella cheese  –  1 cup

Italian Dressing

  • Olive oil  –  3 tbsp
  • Chopped parsley  –  2 tbsp
  • Vinegar  –  2 tbsp
  • Chopped garlic  –  1/2 tbsp
  • Oregano  –  1/4  tbsp
  • Chilli flakes  –  1/4 tbsp
  • Dried basil  –  1 tbsp
  • Lemon Juice  –  1 tbsp


  • Boil the water & cook the tricolor pasta for 15 min. Don’t forget to add a spoon of oil in the water so that pasta don’t stick.
  • Drain the water & wash it with cold water.
  • Steam the broccoli till it becomes soft.
  • Now in a big bowl, add the boiled pasta, steamed broccoli, chopped capsicums, sliced olives & tomatoes.
  • Mix all the Italian dressing ingredients & sprinkle that dressing on the pasta salad. You can sprinkle it according to your taste.
  • Store the excess Italian dressing in an air-tight container in the fridge.
  • Add the grated mozzarella cheese & mix well.
  • Serve this healthy & tangy yummy pasta salad.

  • Rice  –  1 cup
  • Water to cook rice

For Orange rice

  • Tomato puree  –  1/4 cup
  • Ginger paste  –  1/4 spoon
  • Cumin seeds  –  1/4 spoon
  • Turmeric powder  –  1/4 spoon
  • Red chilli powder  –  1 spoon
  • Salt as per taste
  • Ghee  –  2 tbsp

For Green Rice

  • Palak or peas puree  –  1/2 bowl
  • Ginger & green chilli paste  –  1 tbsp
  • Ghee  –  2 tbsp
  • Salt as per taste
  • Cumin seeds  –  1/4 spoon

For White Rice

  • Ghee  –  2 tbsp
  • Cumin seeds  –  1 spoon
  • Chopped onion  –  1/2 bowl
  • Salt as per taste


  • Soak the rice for half hour.
  • Boil the water & cook the rice for 10 min.
  • Drain the excess water & keep the rice aside.
  • Divide the rice into 3 parts.

For Orange Rice

  • Heat a frying pan & add ghee.
  • Add cumin seeds & ginger paste. Stir it for 1 min.
  • Now add tomato puree, red chilli powder, salt and turmeric powder. Cook it for 1 min.
  • Add 1 section of cooked rice & mix it well. Cook it for 5 min.

For Green Rice

  • Take a frying pan & pour ghee in it.
  • Heat it & add cumin seeds.
  • Now add the ginger & green chilli paste & saute it for a min.
  • For green color mix peas or palak puree.
  • Sprinkle the salt & stir it.
  • Finally add another section of rice & mix well.
  • Cook the rice for 5 min.

For white Rice

  • Heat a frying pan & add some ghee to it.
  • Add cumin seeds & onion.
  • Cook the onion till it become translucent or little golden brown.
  • Sprinkle salt & stir.
  • Finally add the leftover rice & cook it for 5 min.

At the time of serving

  • In a serving plate or bowl, First place green rice, then white rice and finally top it with orange rice.
  • Garnish it with fresh coriander leaves, Lemon slices & chopped onions.
  • Yummy tiranga pulao is ready to serve.

5. Tiranga Sandwich

This tricolor Indian food recipe is mainly for kids. Tiranga sandwich is easy to make & a pretty way to add colours to your diet. Through the colors of this snack, you can make your kids learn about the Independence day. Kids learn more when they are friendly with that thing. Just spread out the sausages & chutney on the different layer with the cheese layers  in middle. Cut them into triangular pieces & serve it.

  • Bread slices  –  4
  • Cheese slices  – 2
  • Tomato Sauce  –  1 tbsp
  • Green coriander chutney  –  1 tbsp
  • Mayonnaise  –  1 tea-spoon (optional)


  • Take a bread slice.
  • Mix tomato sauce & mayonnaise & spread it evenly on the slice. You can skip mayonnaise if you wish.
  • Put another bread slice on it & place the cheese slices.
  • Now place another bread slice on the cheese slices & top it with the coriander chutney.
  • Finally place the last slice.
  • While serving you can garnish it with coriander leaves and sev.
  • Cut the sandwich diagnoally. & your yummy tiranga sandwich is ready to serve.
